Many people ask me about why I moved from UK to New York despite having so many other options. Well my simple answer always is that I love art and this is the only recreation for me. The region of America where I found most of the fascinating art was New York and perhaps this is the reason why I decided to relocate here. I really love both the art and artists of New York. However this does not mean that other US cities are not admired by me in terms of art. I have travelled to many US cities and will share some of the cities which I really found artistic.
San Francisco
There are many art related places in San Francisco. The key institution which comes to mind is the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Another place which is worth visiting is de Young Museum. The museum is home to artifacts from Africa, the Americas and Oceania. Overall the city is attractive and has several other sites as well.
Washington DC
Washington DC is one place where you will find a lot of museums. The museums which were thoroughly enjoyed by me where the Corcoran Gallery of Art, National Gallery of Art and the Phillips Collection. As an art lover I really enjoyed my short stay in Washington.
Santa Fe
Santa Fe is basically the capital city of present day New Mexico. The city is the home of Georgia O’Keefe who is a big name in the domain of art. There are several places worth visiting in this fantastic city however some major names are Museum of Indian Arts & Culture and Georgia O’Keefe Museum.
Chicago
I really enjoyed Chicago too. The majority of art collections in Chicago have been preserved in the Art Institute of Chicago. The place has art works of popular people like DalÃ, Pollock and Warhol. As a sculpture fan I also visited the Millennium Park. The place has some of the best sculptures which I have ever seen.
Marfa
Marfa is just a small desert town and the place is not that popular when it comes to art, however still there were some places here where I found attractive art pieces. The Chinati Foundation is highly regarded in the region for its wonderful art collections. Most of these collections have been works of people like John Chamberlain, Carl Andre and Dan Flavin.
Houston
The Houston Art and Museum District has around 20 different museums and all of these museums were toured by me. The place has several cultural organizations as well. Houston Contemporary Arts Museum is the most renowned museum of the region.
LA
The city of LA is rich with artistic offerings. Some of the places which I really enjoyed in the city are Geffen Contemporary, Walt Disney Concert Hall and Los Angeles County Museum of Art. All of these places were simply awesome and I really enjoyed every bit of it.
Seattle
Though Seattle is more popular for the outdoor pursuits however you will be surprised to know that the city has some seriously wonderful art collections as well. The Olympic Sculpture Park was one seriously nice experience for me. The Park has around 15 sculptures of permanent nature under its jurisdiction.
New Orleans
New Orleans is a city full of history as well as heritage. The best place which I remember visiting keeping into consideration art was the Museum of Southern Art. Apart from this I think if you get a chance, do visit the WWII Museum as well. My overall experience in the city was good and I have to admit that some of the art collections were simply phenomenal.
Conclusion
What I have mentioned in the headings above is nothing more than the tip of the iceberg. On each individual city I can write a complete travelogue however the idea here was to encourage you guys to visit the cities mentioned above yourself. As an art lover you will enjoy yourself a lot in these cities. Know more about artistic cities by clicking this link by departures.
